How do I install IGN++?

How do I remove IGN++?

Hopefully, before you remove IGN++, you'll tell me why you're removing it or if you have a problem with it.  If you're going to go through with it, here are instructions:

Firefox users should go here (this page is out of date for Firefox 4+, press Control + Shift + A to open the Add-on Manager)

Chrome users should go here

How do I choose my usercolors?

See Usercolors

My usercolors have suddenly disappeared - what's wrong?

Usercolors are removed from the main list after about a month of inactivity, just post them again.  See Usercolors.

How can I help IGN++?

You can help out in a number of ways.  The method that probably requires the least effort is to donate, which you can do with the pretty button below or with the big blue Contribute button on IGN++'s Firefox add-on listing.

Besides that, you can:

Why are the boards so slow?

IGN++ can be a pretty demanding extension, depending on your settings.  For example, if you have a poor internet connection, Autorefresh can make the boards slower to load.  The specs of your computer can affect the speed of the HTML/Boardcode parsers and how long it takes to add elements to the page.  However, you can disable most features of the extension and should tweak the settings to match your needs.  If you have a weak computer and internet connection, you'll probably need to disable some stuff.

You should disable these things in order and refresh after each change to see what's causing the performance problem.  They are ordered by their likelihood to impact your performance:

You can even disable more stuff if those don't do the trick.  If you find that one change suddenly improves performance, backtrack and turn on other things  to see if they don't slow things down.  If nothing seems to help, your computer has great specs, and you're on a good connection, you may have found a bug.

Why is the Classic theme so slow on the Vesti?

This is a bug on IGN.  Basically, since the vesti has so many pages of topics, because of poor coding the paginator drop-down box has to load up 2-20 megabytes of markup.  You can make it faster by changing your display settings so you see more topics per page, but it's still pretty bad.  Go yell at Homer if you want it fixed.

Why does IGN++ take a second to apply itself?

The extension uses a framework based on Greasemonkey.  This behavior is something inherent in all Greasemonkey scripts and the framework.  Greasemonkey cannot do anything to a page until it's completely loaded (sans images).  Extra links and buttons provided by IGN++ can take a while to show up.  Be aware that the extension is essentially off during this intermediate period, no extra features are on.  If you try to click a link that's normally hijacked, it won't be hijacked.  This problem is especially apparent on the Classic theme which loads much slower.  There is some hope for the earlier addition of event listeners.

Something doesn't work or looks weird, what's wrong?

First, search the known issues and see if I'm already aware of your problem.  If not, perform the standard diagnostic for Firefox (the general idea is similar for Chrome).  I find that about half of people's problems come from other stuff interfering with IGN++ or problems with the boards themselves.  Please don't ask me about something not working until you've at least tried a clean profile on the latest version of your browser and the latest version of IGN++.  If everything works fine on a clean profile, one of your extensions/themes/stylesheets/scripts/preferences is likely causing a problem.  Disable them one-by-one until it's fixed, try to restore default settings on IGN++.  Still doesn't work?  Do a full reinstall of IGN++ and the browser.

If you continue to have problems, you can see if the browser detects any errors.  Enable message logging in Options under Miscellaneous > Dev.  Visit the page where the problem occurs.  Open up the error console by pressing Control + Shift + J.  Clear the error console.  Perform whatever action is necessary to get your problem to occur (refresh the page if the problem occurs when the page loads).  Look in the error console and see if you can find any errors.  If you find any, it will probably be helpful to PM me a copy of the errors.  Note that the error console will often show errors unrelated to IGN++, so seeing something in there doesn't necessarily mean you've found the cause of the problem.

If your issue concerns performance, you should probably look at "Why are the boards so slow?"

This script is usually developed on the latest stable version of Firefox or the Beta channel on Chrome.  It's tested on a Windows 7 64-bit machine.  Don't be surprised if it doesn't work elsewhere or on an unsupported browser version.  I have no resources to test the extension myself on other operating systems, but I'm open to fixing OS-specific bugs if I can.

Also, beware of these problematic things (some concerns are from long ago and may work fine now):

  • IGNBQ and IGN's quick post - Turn them off
  • Bluetex 2 Main Stylesheet (usercolor problems) - Use this instead
  • Emoticon Cache (weird looking faces) - Use this instead
  • It's All Text! (slow panels) - Turn it off, it was very buggy at one point
  • Bluetex 2 Anti page stretch and No scrollbar in quotes(screen tearing) - Don't use them
  • Bluetex 3 Main Stylesheet - Older versions resulted in incorrect placement of Vesti Wiki search button, made integrated tools look weird

If you've done all that you can, but still have a problem, you can try sending me a PM or reporting an issue directly on github.

Why am I double posting or opening multiple panels?

This is usually caused by not uninstalling Vesti Tools before installing IGN++.  This situation is especially apparent if you see a bar constantly floating on the bottom of your screen - IGN++ does not have this.  Remove or disable Vesti Tools.

This also can be caused by a bug in Greasemonkey/Firefox that should have been fixed in IGN++ 2.0.7.  Refreshing the page should make it go away.  I occasionally get reports of this bug still occurring for some people, but I can't pinpoint why it happens for them.
